MAIN ENGINE OVERHAUL

Main engine is the heart of the vessel, which provide all the power for the vessel, even the propulsion of propeller moving the ship. Main engine is important, it is necessary to understand the main engine operation, as well as how to operate professionally, inrease the efficiency and partly increase the life of main engine and relevant equipments.

To overhaul, recondition, compulsory that the worker shall be understand the main engine and what have to do to complete the job.

The procedure to over haul the main engine is not much difference between main engine brand, can be list out the most famous and popular main engine branches are Man B&W, Warsilar, Yanmar…

Main engine

Procedure to overhaul the main engine generally as below steps:

1. Inspect the crankshaft before repair if necessary and required from Vessel.
2. Isolate relevant systems before start the overhaul job.
3. Remove cylinder head (Cullasse):
   1. Remove relevant machine detail and parts
   2. Remove bolt and disassembly rocker arm
   3. Lift-up the cylinder head and the discharge poppet valve box from the machine and put it in a safe position on the floor in the engine room. After the repair is complete, reassemble.
4. Cylinder lubricating gun: Remove and check the clearance of the injection hole, check the sealing of the cylinder assembly to be replaced.
5. Piston & connection rod: Remove the piston-connection rod, put it on a safe shelf, cleaning, check the segment gap, replace the O-ring and completely reassemble.
6. Piston crown, piston rod stuffing box, bush, seal… inspection working condition, measurement and record if necessary.
7. Separate all the water in and out of the cylinder, remove and cleaing, replace the seal. Complete install after repair.
8. Cylinder liner: Remove cylinder liner and re-fit. Measuring and get assembly data, replace O-ring, clean the fresh cooling water compartment.
9. Reinstall, calibration, test and commisioning.

Cylinder liner is stuck?

A common way to remove a stuck cylinder liner is to use hydraulic jacks on the bottom of the cylinder liner and apply hydraulic pressure. Once the liner is slightly moved out of the stuck engine structure, it may be then lifted with the help of engine room crane and lifting tool.
